Shopping for a new car can be a lot of fun. Just deciding what type of car you are searching for could be an adventure by itself. Buying a car is a serious matter though, because in essence you are purchasing an investment. Unless you are searching for something to get you to and from work and nothing more, than chances are you are actually searching for an expensive item that you one day will be selling.
So, how do you go about car shopping in a smart way that will help you see some return in the future? Well, there are several techniques and bits of knowledge that can help take the stress out of searching for a new vehicle.
The most important first step in car shopping is deciding exactly what kind of car you want. This means research, research and more research. What options do you want? Is a navigation system something that you really need installed? You should consider color, gas mileage and body style. Once you have narrowed your search for a car down to a few choices. The next step is to look at consumer reports. There are plenty of companies out there that offer free reviews by unbiased test drivers. Find out the high and low points of the cars you are looking for and figure out which one best suit your needs.
One of the next steps can be both the best and worst part of looking for a new car. This, of course, is the test drive. Yes, it is time to go to a dealership and find out what you are made of. The reason this aspect of looking for a car is the best is because you actually get to roar around in your potential new wheels. The reason this can be a less than pleasant experience is the car dealer who will be sitting next to you.
Some put car dealers and lawyers in the same boat. But with lawyers, at least they are usually trying to sell you something you need. A car dealer, unless you know him as a friend, is going to try and sell you every bell, whistle and basket of kittens possible when it comes to the car. This is something you have to be prepared for. They are not going to ask you, what is it you are looking for in this car? They are going to say, how can we get you into this car today? Will it be uncomfortable for you? Yes. Is it going to happen? Yes. But, if you are ready to be assertive and armed with the knowledge you gathered beforehand, you can fire back with good answers.
Which leads to the next tip, do not buy the car or make any decision the day you go to test-drive. If you do, this means you were bought and sold like a cheap pair of used socks. Instead, make them sweat it out. Go to several dealerships and haggle with them. After all, it is you that is shopping for a new car, so you naturally should want the best price possible. If the dealer knows you are shopping around at different places, they probably are going to be more malleable on their price negotiations.
Finally, aim low, really low. Give them an offer that you know anyone in their right mind would refuse. The reason for this is that in doing this, you have a very low beginning to start from. Do not be insulting with your offer, but let them know you are not messing around.
Most of all, have fun, be smart and realize that knowledge is always power when searching for a new car.
