A Man Finds Home with Storage Units in New York With congested living conditions where 8.2 million people live within 322 square miles, one can see how New York has one of the worlds worst storage problems. This makes storage units in New York the most popular place on earth. New Yorkers, like Chris Ryan, seek additional storage space to compensate for the lack of storage their apartment provides. When these old apartment buildings were built, architects did not vision the storage need for the modern man. Today, we consume more furniture, clothing, and shoes then ever before. This leads to huge storage problems for the common city dweller. Steve moved to New York 6 months ago from Des Moines, IA when his company relocated him to the Big Apple. He was used to the wide open land space he enjoyed in Iowa. That’s why he was in shock when he searched for a New York City apartment. He realized his lifestyle would be more cramped with the lack of storage space apartments offer. “I would love to sit out on my terrace and enjoy the views of the city,” said Chris. “But I can’t because I have my bike storage and my treadmill storage out there.” If you think that is a problem, the inside is no better. Unfortunately the layout is very tight. The couch is angled away from the dinning table to create a walking path though the room. But in order to use the dinning table, the couch has to be moved back to get the chairs out. “There’s just not enough space. I can’t have friend over and I can’t entertain.” Chris is even less fond of the kitchen. About the size of an RV kitchen, Chris’s kitchen is too small for all his dishes and glasses. His glass storage and dish storage overtakes his counter space. His pot and pan storage is on top of the stove. His tiny cabinet space fits just enough dishes and glasses for one place setting. “I don’t think I want to cook a meal in here anymore. It’s too hard” The bedroom can barley hold his furniture and the closet storage doesn’t stand a chance against Chris’s shoes. His clothes and shoes mimic an avalanche as they pour out of his closet onto the floor. “I need more closet space. My closet is so small, I can’t fit all my clothes in it; I have lots of shoes and need more shoe storage. I love to buy shoes and I love to buy clothes and I just can’t because I just don’t have enough shoe storage and clothe storage. Chris really needs more space and because finding another apartment is not an option. Chris loves to bike and loves his furniture so selling it is not an option. He knows his company will relocate him again sometime in the future, so he would like to keep his kitchenware and kitchen appliances for future use. It’s time for Chris to look into some storage units in New York so he can live comfortably in his apartment. But Chris’s dilemma is that he doesn’t know how much storage space he will need for furniture storage, shoe storage, clothing storage, and kitchen appliance storage. He doesn’t even know how to start his search. So, his first approach is to check the internet for self storage blogs to find self storage secretes. Life in New York runs at much faster pace then De Moines and New Yorkers go by the motto, if you snooze, you lose. The self storage market is at the same high tense level. Storage units in New York inventory are low and prices are skyrocketing. Chris, used to a mellow lifestyle will have to move quickly if he wants to storage space.
The storage property manager lines up Chris with a couple of different storage units where he can use for furniture storage, shoe storage, and kitchen storage. The first is a 5 by 10 unit that may hold all of his storage needs. This one just became available. Steve likes the tall ceilings and the cleanliness of the storage unit. “I should be able to fit my dinning table in here. It will be awesome to get my walking space back.” But Chris is not sure about this unit and wants to see something bigger. The property manager shows Chris a 10 by 10 unit. It’s a little bigger and should fit all his furniture, kitchen appliances, and shoes. “This size storage unit will be great for my furniture storage and my shoe storage.” He is impressed with this units ceilings and cleanliness too, but has concerns about the security at storage units in New York. The property manager insures him that his furniture storage will be much safer in a storage unit than at his apartment. He tells Chris about how storage units in New York are locked and protected by a fences gate. Storage businesses are constantly watched by video surveillance. If that is not enough, some storage units have alarms and onsite management teams. Although it takes a few seconds, Chris is convinced when he sees everything for himself. His only concern now is how his furniture storage, kitchen storage, and shoe storage will manage in New York’s extreme temperature variations. The property manager suggests to Chris a climate control storage unit. At a constant 70 degrees his wooden furniture storage and shoe storage will not know if it is 100 degrees or 30 degrees below zero outside. Chris looks a couple more storage business before he makes a final decision. He wanted to see what differences exist between storage units in New York. He found that not all storage properties offered the same amenities. For half the cost of the last storage units he looked at, his furniture and kitchen appliances wouldn’t be as secure. He noticed the second storage business was not as clean and well lighted. In a dangerous city like New York, his storage property would be at high risk. He decides spending the extra money for security is worth the dollars that might be spent on replacing his furniture, kitchenware, and bicycle. After a few days, Chris made his decision on a storage unit. He chose the climate controlled unit that is well secure and clean. He rented the 10 by 10 because he found other uses for his storage unit. Now Chris is living the lifestyle he had always dreamed about in New York. Everyday, whether it is hot or cold he makes a point to sit out on his terrace and enjoy the views of New York City’s skyline and traffic. He had found paradise in New York. “I love my apartment now. There is no more restriction like I had before. I can have as many plants as I like on my terrace and relax and enjoy the view.” He continues, “During the day I get to watch all the tourists looking up watching me, and at night, I get to see all the city lights.” “I am having guests over more often and sharing my apartment with the beautiful view with the people that mean so much to me.” Also, he gets a lot more company from is home town, friends and relatives that visit him in New York. Before he barley had enough space for one person, but now he can have overnight guests and be able to move around his apartment. “It just feels like home now. This is home.”
